- Check what uses the space before you delete anything.
- Empty Recently Deleted or the Trash.
- Move big videos to a computer and keep two copies.
- Review and clear space once a month.
It starts with a few saved Reels. Then a few more. Then your phone announces that storage is almost full and refuses to take another photo. Do not panic and do not start deleting at random. These nine steps free up space safely, starting with the easiest.
1. See what is actually using the space
Open your phone's storage settings. On iPhone it is General, then iPhone Storage. On Android it is Settings, then Storage. You will see a breakdown by type. Fix the biggest category first. It is usually Photos and Videos or a few large apps.
2. Empty the “Recently Deleted” folder
When you delete a photo or video, most phones keep it for a while in case you change your mind. It still takes up space. Open the Recently Deleted album (iPhone) or the Trash or Bin (Android) and empty it.
3. Delete what you have already watched
If you saved videos to watch offline, as in our guide to watching Instagram videos offline, delete them once you are done. A folder of finished videos is wasted space.
4. Move the big ones to a computer
Connect your phone to a computer or use a cable-free transfer and copy the biggest videos over. Once they are safely stored, remove them from the phone. Keep two copies if they matter.
5. Use cloud storage, carefully
Services like Google Photos, iCloud and others store your library online and let you remove local copies. Make sure the upload has finished before you delete anything, and understand whether deleting on the phone also deletes in the cloud.
6. Clear app caches and downloads
Social apps store temporary files that can reach gigabytes. On Android you can clear the cache of an app in its settings. On iPhone, offloading or reinstalling an app clears it. Also check the Downloads folder in your Files app.
7. Shrink new videos in the first place
Camera settings affect size a lot. Recording in a more efficient format can make files much smaller, as we explain in our video formats guide. Shooting in 1080p instead of 4K cuts the size of each clip sharply, and for Instagram it makes no visible difference. See the size cheat sheet.
8. Remove duplicates and screenshots
Saved posts often leave duplicates behind: the original, a screenshot and a copy in a chat. Your gallery may have a duplicates album that groups them for you. Screenshots you no longer need can go too.
9. Review old apps and offline downloads
Streaming apps, maps and games keep offline files. Delete what you will not use this month. You can always download it again.
How much space do videos really use?
| Video | Rough size per minute |
|---|---|
| 1080p, standard format | Around 60 to 130 MB |
| 1080p, efficient format (HEVC) | Often about half of that |
| 4K | Several times larger than 1080p |
This is why a few long clips can fill a phone faster than hundreds of photos.
iPhone-specific steps
- Open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage and read the suggestions.
- Turn on offloading for apps you rarely use. It keeps their data and removes the app itself.
- Review large attachments in Messages and delete the ones you do not need.
- In Photos settings, enable the storage-saving option once your library has fully uploaded to the cloud.
Android-specific steps
- Open Settings, then Storage, and look at what takes the most room.
- Use a file manager app's clean-up suggestions to find junk files, duplicates and large items.
- In your photo app, use the option to free up space after backup.
- If your phone has a memory card slot, move videos to the card.
Habits that keep your phone light
- Choose one day a month to review and delete.
- Save only the videos you will really watch again.
- Put keepers in an album so they are easy to find and the rest are easy to remove.
- Keep at least ten per cent of your storage free so your phone stays fast.
When it is time to get more space
If you have cleaned up and still run out, consider a paid cloud storage plan, an external drive or a phone with more storage next time. Doing the clean-up first means you only pay for what you actually need.
What not to delete
Clean-ups go wrong when people delete things they cannot get back. Do not remove the only copy of a family video, a work file or anything you cannot download again. Photos and videos taken by you are the first to back up, and saved posts from Instagram are the easiest to replace because you can fetch a public post again from its link. When in doubt, move it to another device first and delete it later.
A five-minute clean-up
- Empty Recently Deleted.
- Delete watched videos.
- Move the three biggest videos to a computer.
- Clear one heavy app's cache.
- Check your storage again.
Once you have space, you can keep saving. A public Reel is only a link away with our Reels downloader. Just remember to tidy up now and then.
