- Save videos on Wi-Fi before you travel.
- Test one video in airplane mode before you leave.
- Organise saved clips in an album or folder.
- Delete finished videos to free up space.
Long flights, underground trains and countryside roads have one thing in common: the signal disappears just when you want something to watch. Instagram needs a connection, so the best fix is simple. Save the videos you care about before you leave, then play them from your phone.
Plan it the day before
Do this while you are on Wi-Fi at home, not at the airport. Public networks are slow, and you do not want to be pasting links while the gate is closing. Make a short list of what you want to keep: a tutorial, a workout, a recipe, a language lesson, a few funny Reels.
Step by step
- Open each post in Instagram and tap Share, then Copy link.
- Open our Reels downloader or the video downloader in your browser.
- Paste the link and tap Download.
- Choose the top quality button. The video saves as an MP4 file.
- Repeat for each video on your list.
On an iPhone, open the downloaded file from Safari's downloads list and choose Save Video to add it to Photos. On Android, files land in your Downloads folder and appear in the gallery. Our guides for iPhone and Android show each tap.
Make room first
Ten Reels at about 15 megabytes each take roughly 150 megabytes, which is small. A hundred of them is a lot more. Before a trip, check your free space and clear anything you do not need. If you are short on space, our article on freeing up storage has easy wins.
Organise so you can find things
- Create an album called “Offline” on iPhone, or a folder on Android.
- Rename files you care about, such as “squat-form-tutorial.mp4”.
- Delete each one after you have watched it to keep your phone tidy.
Check that it plays before you leave
Switch on airplane mode and open one saved video. If it plays, they all will. It takes ten seconds and saves you from finding out at 35,000 feet.
Other offline ideas
- Photos and carousels: use the carousel downloader to save every slide of a travel guide or a reading list.
- Long videos: the IGTV downloader keeps longer videos for a journey.
- Audio: if you only want to listen, play the video with the screen off.
What is worth saving for offline viewing?
- Tutorials and recipes you want to follow step by step.
- Workout routines for the gym, where signal is often poor.
- Language lessons and short explainers.
- Travel guides saved as carousels, including maps and lists.
- Your own memories that you want on your phone as well as in the app.
How much storage will it take?
| Videos saved | Rough space (about 15 MB each) |
|---|---|
| 10 | About 150 MB |
| 50 | About 750 MB |
| 200 | About 3 GB |
Real sizes vary with length and quality, but this gives a good idea of what to expect before a trip.
Playing videos without the app
Saved videos open in your normal gallery, and any video player will do. If you want a playlist, create an album on iPhone or a folder on Android and play through it. If you only want to listen, start a video and lock the screen on a phone that continues playing, or use a player that keeps audio running in the background.
Travel tips
- Download on Wi-Fi, because mobile data may be slow or costly abroad.
- Carry a power bank. Watching video drains the battery quickly.
- Use headphones, and keep your volume polite on public transport.
- Save a few extra videos in case the first ones are not what you are in the mood for.
Offline entertainment on a long trip
If you are travelling for many hours, mix your downloads. Save a few short, funny clips for when you are tired, some longer tutorials for when you are focused and a handful of calm videos for the moment before sleep. Variety keeps a small collection feeling fresh, and it means you do not need to save everything. Many people end up with a hundred videos and watch five.
It also helps to decide a limit before you start. A simple rule, such as twenty favourites per trip, keeps your phone light and makes you choose the ones that really matter.
A tiny packing list
- Save your videos on Wi-Fi.
- Test one in airplane mode.
- Charge your phone and bring a cable.
- Delete what you have watched when you land.
