Is It Legal to Download Instagram Videos? A Plain Answer
We’re not lawyers and this isn’t legal advice, and the rules differ from country to country. But the general picture is fairly consistent, and it’s worth knowing.
The content belongs to its creator
Whoever filmed the video or took the photo owns the copyright in it. Downloading doesn’t change that. Saving a copy to watch offline, for yourself, is the kind of use that rarely causes problems in practice.
Where people get into trouble
Reposting. Uploading someone else’s Reel to your own account, putting it in a video you sell, or using it in an ad is where copyright holders object, and Instagram removes content on request. Music adds another layer, because tracks have their own licences.
Instagram’s own terms
Instagram’s terms of use don’t encourage downloading content outside the app. That’s a matter between you and the platform rather than a criminal one, but it’s a reason to keep things to personal use.
A simple rule
- Your own content: fine.
- Someone else’s, just to keep: usually fine.
- Someone else’s, to publish or sell: ask first, and get the answer in writing.
If someone has used a download of your work without permission, you can ask us to look into it through our copyright page.
