Why an Instagram Video Won’t Download (and Fixes)

Updated October 22, 2026

When a download fails, it’s almost always one of the reasons below. Go down the list in order. The first few cover most cases.

1. The account is private

We can only fetch public posts. If you can’t open the post in a browser without logging in, we can’t get it either. There’s no way around that, and there shouldn’t be.

2. You copied the wrong link

A link to someone’s profile won’t work, and neither will a half-copied link. It needs to be the link to the exact post, Reel or video. See how to copy a post link.

3. The post or story is gone

If the creator deleted it, or a story passed its 24 hours, the link no longer leads anywhere.

4. You’re using Instagram’s built-in browser

When you tap a link inside the Instagram or Facebook app, it opens in a small in-app browser that often blocks downloads. Open the downloader in Safari or Chrome instead.

5. You’ve made a lot of requests very quickly

To stop abuse, there’s a limit on how many links one person can process in a few minutes. Wait a few minutes and try again.

6. The video plays instead of saving

Some browsers open the file. Tap the three dots on the player and choose Download, or press and hold the button and choose Download linked file.

7. A VPN, ad blocker or weak connection

Try switching the VPN off, pausing the ad blocker for this page, or moving to a better connection. Large videos on a weak signal can simply time out.

8. Your phone is out of space

If storage is nearly full, the save can fail without a clear message. Free up some space and retry, or pick a lower quality.

9. Instagram changed something

Now and then Instagram changes how it delivers videos and things break for a while. Try again later. If a public post still won’t load, send us the link through the contact page.
