How to Save Instagram Photos on iPhone and Android (Full Size)

Updated November 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Taking a screenshot is the quick way to keep an Instagram photo, but it’s the worst way. You pick up the status bar and buttons, the picture is cropped to your screen and the resolution is lower. Downloading the real image takes about the same time and gives you a clean JPG.

On an iPhone

  1. Open the post in Instagram and tap paper plane › Copy link.
  2. Open Safari and go to the photo downloader.
  3. Paste the link, tap Download and tap the button under the picture.
  4. Safari asks to download the file. Tap Download.
  5. Open Safari’s Downloads list (the arrow by the address bar), tap the image and then Share › Save Image.

On Android

  1. Tap paper plane › Copy link in Instagram.
  2. Open Chrome, go to the photo downloader and paste the link.
  3. Tap Download, then the button under the photo.
  4. The JPG saves to Downloads and usually appears in Gallery or Google Photos.

Posts with many photos

If a post has several pictures, every slide gets its own card and button, so you can take only the shots you like. For a full set, see how to download all photos from a carousel.

How sharp will it be?

Instagram usually stores feed photos at about 1080 pixels wide. That’s fine for a phone wallpaper or a small print, but it won’t fill a poster. Our full quality guide and the size guide explain what to expect.

Respect the photographer

A photo belongs to the person who took it. Keeping a copy for your own use is fine in most places, but ask before you post it, print it to sell or use it in ads, and credit the creator if you share it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a screenshot good enough?

A screenshot copies the screen, so it includes buttons and is sized to your display. Downloading the JPG gets the picture itself at the size Instagram stored.

Can I save only one photo from a post with several?

Yes. Each slide appears separately and you pick the ones you want.

Where is the photo saved?

Chrome on Android saves to Downloads, and Safari on iPhone keeps it in its Downloads list until you tap Share › Save Image.
